Boone Town Council Calls for CO Detectors PDF Print

After three tragic deaths at the Boone Best Western Hotel, the Boone Town Council is taking action, voting unanimously last night to petition the North Carolina Building Code Council to amend state codes to require that carbon monoxide detectors be required in hotels. Several points were made by council members Alan Scherlen and Lynn Mason, Mason saying, “It’s a health and safety issue, and these deaths were totally preventable through the use of carbon monoxide detectors. So, I think, at a minimum, we need to consider the first option of a petitioning the State Building Code Council.” Town attorney Sam Furgiuele advised that the town did not have clear authority to make its own law, but council members voted to put the matter before the state’s  Building Code Council.
