Sinkhole Swallows Shoppes Monday Business PDF Print

A sinkhole sunk business—at least for one day—at Tanger Shoppes on the Parkway.  Employees said that, about 9:30 yesterday morning, workers doing some work near the entrance, watched as the median between the entrance and exit lanes, suddenly disappeared. The hole developed in a confluence of drainage systems, with pipes from four directions intersecting under a culvert there.  But what workers then discovered was an area where they were working further up the driveway that encircles the businesses was only pavement, and that the area underneath had been washed away.  That caused the mall management to close the mall and evacuate staff and shoppers, managing that with no mishaps.  Mall manager Heidi Ellis said yesterday that crews were to work all through the day yesterday to create a temporary path to the parking lot, and shoppers will be directed to the stores using that path beginning this morning, with anticipation that the Shoppes would open on time today.
