An Appalachian State University professor made a cameo in the Futurama movie released Tuesday.
Bender’s Big Score, based on the Sunday evening cartoon show Fox cancelled after 72 episodes, features a math lecture in its extras by Dr. Sarah Greenwald. She was such a hit that show producer Matt Groening named a mathematic theorem after her- at least in the Futurama world.
A fan of the show, Greenwald didn’t do it for the fame.
She uses pop references in her math lectures.
Futurama Producer David X. Cohen heard about Greenwald- and invited her to come out to the Fox lot to film a math lecture. She got to interact with special Futurama guests for 25 minutes.
Voice actors she met include Billy West.
Greenwald says comedy often stereotypes mathematicians and scientists.
“Often mathematicians and scientists are presented as people who do magic or geniuses.”
Futurama producers share her concern.
“One of the goals of the lecture I gave was to showcase that mathematicians are regular people too.”
While the experience was exciting- Greenwald has no immediate plans to pursue acting as a career.
“I’m very happy being a math professor.”
