Community grieves for accident victim PDF Print

The High Country community continues to grieve for 22-year-old Andrew Russell “Drew” Newell of Boone.

Newell was killed Friday when an alleged drunk driver rear-ended his family vehicle. Newell was a student at Caldwell Community College and graduated Watauga High School in 2004 where he played baseball. His father, mother and sister were injured in the wreck. All except his father, who is still at Johnson City Medical Center, have been released. Friends of the Newells have created a blog to keep family and friends updated on Brian’s status. It’s 


Juan Manuel Juarez Reyes has been charged with second-degree murder in Newell’s death. Police say Reyes was intoxicated when he hit the Newell vehicle, pushing it 250 feet into a Watauga County patrol vehicle. Reyes, who illegally entered the country from Mexico after being caught by border patrol agents in 2002, is being held on a one million dollar bond.


While authorities are unclear on how long Reyes has been in the country, he has been employed at Timber Structure Builders of Boone as a carpenter.
