Tuesday, 27 November 2007 06:16

Juan ReyesAfter further investigating Friday’s fatal 105 collision, Boone Police have filed additional charges against suspected drunk driver Juan Manuel Juarez Reyes.

Reyes has been charged with second-degree murder for the death of 22-year-old Andrew Newell.

Newell died when Reyes’ vehicle rear-ended the Lexus he was riding in as it stopped to turn left on Poplar Hill Road. Newell’s mother and sister were injured in the crash but released from Watauga Medical Center. His father, Brian Newell, is still at Johnson City Medical Center.

Reyes has also been charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. These charges are in addition to the three felonious counts of inflicting serious injury by vehicle, the driving while impaired charge and the driving without an operator’s license charge. Reyes is being held on a one million dollar bond.

Boone Police have confirmed Reyes did not have legal citizenship status.  Investigation revealed U.S. Border Patrol Agents captured Reyes when he attempted to enter the United States in 2002. He was then transported back to Mexico. No word on how long he has been in the country.
