Members of the Blowing Rock Fire Department, Blowing Rock Police Department and Watauga Medics helped rescue a sick man off of a rugged and steep trial on Sunday afternoon. The man who was in his 50's had hiked with friends down Upper Thunderhole Trail which is part of the Pisgah National Forest. They group had gotten about a mile down the tail and the man became sick to the point that he could not walk back out on his own strength.
The ten rescuers reached the man and gave him medical attention. They used a stokes basket mounted on a large wheel to get him out of the woods. The trail was only a foot or so wide in many areas, very steep with rocks and trees that were laying across it. The rescuers were able to overcome the rugged terrain and get the man to safety. He was transported to Watauga Medical Center.
