It took a hand count to determine the third seat on the Beech Mountain Town Council. While Alan Holcombe and incumbent Rick Owen had enough votes to be safely seated, incumbents Paul Piquet and Randy Corn were tied prior to canvassing, 64-64. With three seats open, someone had to go, and some hoped the provisional ballots would make the decision. Both approved provisional ballots, however, went to Holcombe and it took a hand recount to determine Randy Corn the victor: by one vote. Board of Elections Director Jane Hodges said it was likely someone improperly filled in their ballot by not darkening the circle completely. Such errors can be caught by a hand count but can be missed by machine. Hodges says Beech Mountain typically has close elections.
Had a hand count revealed another tie, Sheriff Len Hagaman was on hand to draw one of the names out of a hat to decide the election.
