|Coach candidate makes Veteran’s Day stop|

Coach Roy Carter, Democratic challenger to Republican Representative Virginia Foxx, paid a visit to Boone for Veteran’s Day.Instead of giving speeches to veterans, he talked with veterans at an informal luncheon at Café Portafino.
Deep Gap’s Richard Anderson’s son ships out to Iraq in two months- and that’s among his motivations for supporting Carter.
"I know that we can't get out of Iraq tomorrow, but I know that Coach Carter will have a thoughtful, deliberate way of looking at it, and I trust Coach Carter to do what's right for our veterans and our service people."
Veteran and ASU student Charlie Anderson has to drive to Winston Salem to receive care for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It’s something he simply can’t fit into his schedule.
"When we join, we believe we're going to be taken care of if this doesn't go well. We did our half of the contract... I think this is a raw deal," Anderson says.
That’s something Carter hopes to fix.
"You've given a big part of your life for your country, and you deserve services in Boone. You deserve services where you live," he says.
Each Congressman gets a certain amount of time to speak about whatever he or she deems appropriate on the Congressional floor, Carter says. He already knows how he’ll use his time, if elected.
"I won't stand up and bash the other party with hate and spew ignorance with my minute. I'll get up and talk about the veterans and some real issues. Somebody ought to read the names of the soldiers we've lost each week on the congressional floor."
Carter is the North Wilkes High School Football Coach and an Ashe resident. For more information on his 5th district campaign, visit roycarterforcongress.com.
