Watauga 42, Alexander Central 14

Watauga routed Alexander Central Friday  on the ground and in the air. Adam Chiarolanzio tossed three touchdowns, and Watauga, led by Eric Breitenstein's 140 yards, ran for 213 yards in this first round of the playoffs. Chiarolanzio also returned a fumble recovery.

In other area first round football action:

Avery came up short against Swain County, 15-8, as the Vikings gave away all 15 points in second quarter turnovers. Avery's Travis Thomas ran 15 times for 76 yards, but rain limited both teams' running game. Avery's lone score came on a Chris Childress punt return of 89 yards midway through the third quarter. Swain’s defense forced five turnovers.

Ashe County edged South Iredell, 13-8.

Wilkes Central routed Bessemer City, 35-12.

West Wilkes lost to Jordan-matthews, 19-6.

East Wilkes staged a dramatic 10-point comeback in the final minute to beat Hayesville 17- 14, in Hayesville. Most of the scoring came late in the game. Jonathon Shively scored on a 30-yard run to give Hayesville a 14-7 lead with six minutes to go, but East Wilkes’ Graylan Tharpe hit Josh Nation on a 5-yard scoring strike with 58.3 seconds remaining. Hayesville then went three and out and punted. East Wilkes completed a  48-yard pass that set up Daniel Mesimer’s 25-yard, game-winning field goal.
Aaron Bauguess led East Wilkes with 34 carries, 172 yards and a touchdown.
