The Associated Press reported yesterday that a new shot
could help people stop smoking.
A study showed more than twice as many people
given five of the shots stopped smoking than those given fewer or placebo
shots. The vaccine, NicVAX, is designed to “immunize” smokers against the rush
fueling their addiction. It aims at stopping nicotine from reaching the brain-
“taking the fun out of smoking” and, hopefully, making it easier to quit.
Of the nation’s 46 million smokers, 40 percent attempt
to quit each year. Fewer than 5 percent succeed long-term.
