Watauga High School won a share of the Western 4A Conference title, its first in 26 years, Friday evening as the Pioneers bested A.C. Reynolds of Asheville, 25-13. Watauga led throughout, getting on the board as Eric Breitenstein galloped 59 yards for Watauga's first score midway through the first quarter. The Pioneers never looked back, taking a 20-0 lead into the halftime intermission, and coasting in the second half.
The win resulted in identical conference records, a three-way tie for first among Watauga, A.C. Reynolds and East Burke. The three-way forces a draw for first, which will take place Saturday, when the matchups for the first round of the playoffs will be announced.
Further developments will be posted on goblueridge.net and announced on the radio stations of the High Country.
