Spectacular Fire South of Blowing Rock PDF Print

A huge woods fire north of Lenoir yesterday blackened a large area—probably 100 acres.  As darkness fell, the High Eagle Fire was a spectacular sight, firemen having a hard time getting to the rugged area about 8-miles north of Lenoir in the Nelson’s Chapel area. The North Carolina Forest Service brought in a helicopter to fight the fire, but the best help was the overnight rain—not a lot of rain, but the increased moisture helping quell the spread of the fire. The forest service says there are no homes in the area but they were expecting this fire to grow from about a dozen acres to nearly one hundred overnight.
