West Jefferson ABC Store Up and Running PDF Print
Thursday, 01 November 2007 19:00

The voters approved it in March- but it wasn’t until yesterday that West Jefferson’s first ever ABC store opened its doors.

ABC Board Chairman Chris Barr was among the crowd that showed up at yesterday’s grand opening.

“It’s going to have a big economic impact. More restaurants will open up and all the restaurants that are there now will be able to serve mixed beverages like they couldn’t do before and it will hopefully impact the economy in a lot of different ways,” Barr said.

While the possibility of an ABC store caused initial controversy- the mood at the grand opening was resoundingly positive, Barr said.

“Everybody has their own opinion and religious beliefs and set of values that they live by, but at the same token Ashe County is growing, and particularly, West Jefferson is growing, where it’s ready for this,” Barr said.

It’s off to a good start. Day one yielded over $8,600 in sales and 305 customers.
