Democratic State Senator Kay Hagan officially announced her
candidacy for U.S. Senate against incumbent Republican Senator Elizabeth Dole.
Hagan said she would run on Friday, countering previous statements that she was
not intending to seek federal office. Hagan is a five-term legislator and
attorney from Greensboro who has been a co-chairman of the Senate
Appropriations Committee since 2003.
Her competition for the Democratic bid is Chapel Hill
corporate financial adviser Jim Neal.
