High Country grieves for accident victims PDF Print

Three fatal accidents since Friday have the High Country mourning today.

Friday, 62-year-old Thomas Cameron Simon, 65-year-old George Wesley Wiggins and 63-year-old Mary E. Wiggins of Ashe County and Sarasota Florida were killed when a tractor-trailer crossed the centerline, overturned and slid into their northbound Chevrolet Avalanche pickup. The incident happened about 12 miles west of Wilkesboro on N.C. Highway 421. Tractor-trailer driver 47-year-old Curtis Isaac Mondy of St. Petersburg, Florida was charged with three counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle and one count of reckless driving.

Wilkes County was hit with loss on Sunday when 37-year-old Victor Manuel Chilel wrecked his car on Suncrest Orchard Road just west of North Wilkesboro. No other cars or individuals were involved. Chilel was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities suspect alcohol was involved, but are awaiting the results of a toxicology report.

Miles from Friday’s wreck, a Nissan Xterra slid across the centerline of 421 into a northbound Chevrolet Corsica early yesterday, causing the Corsica to slide head-on into a logging truck, killing a Zionville man. Troopers say 31-year-old Marshal Shawn Hopper of Zionville may have fallen asleep at the wheel when he lost control of the Xterra. The Corsica driver, 40-year-old William Craig Isaacs of Zionville, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Monday’s accident happened just after 7:30 a.m. in the Cove Creek community.
