Jefferson, West Jefferson and Lansing residents are among those hitting the polls Tuesday.

Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. 1,074 people are registered to vote in Jefferson, 1,086 in West Jefferson and 135 in Lansing. Jefferson and Lansing residents should plan on voting at their respective fire stations. West Jefferson’s site is the Ashe County Arts Center.

Jefferson Mayor Dana Tugman is running unopposed. Incumbents L.F. “Junior Anderson Jr. and Charles Caudill, as well as newcomer Gwen Ashley will battle it out for the two town council seats.

In West Jefferson, incumbent Mayor Dale Baldwin faces Dale Hudler. The council race may be the one to watch, however, with five residents fighting for two seats, including incumbents Bob McCoy and Bret Summey as well as challengers Tom Hartman, Donnie Miller and former councilman and Fire Chief Grant Price.

Lansing’s race is the least exciting of the Ashe elections- with Mayor Jason Ring and Aldermen John Michael Powers and Dot Shupe running unopposed. Appointed Alderman Israel Church seeks election to an unexpired term ending in 2009.

Questions about Ashe County municipal elections should be directed to the Ashe County Board of Elections at 336-219-2570.
