The mood improved on Grandfather Mountain today after rescue
workers finally reached a hiker in need this afternoon on Underwood Trail.
initial report described a fallen hiker, prompting quick action by rescue
personnel. Due to the terrain, it did take time for rescue personnel to reach
the victim, but when they did, it was all good news.
Grandfather Mountain’s Crae Morton received a report
just before 3 p.m. that the unidentified woman has been treated on scene and is
able to hike with assistance. A doctor was with her during the incident, Morton
says, although it is unclear if the doctor arrived on the scene or was part of
the initial hiking group. While her medical condition is still being assessed,
Morton says she’s expected to recover. Accidents occasionally happen on the trails
at Grandfather, Morton says, and rescue workers have swift protocol to follow. That
protocol was followed, with positive results.
