Rock was a freak accident, investigators say PDF Print
Sunday, 28 October 2007 19:00

A bike ride on the New River Trail just over the border in Virginia turned deadly last week

in what investigators are calling a freak accident. Shortly before 5 p.m. on October 20, a large slab of rock dislodged and fell down a steep precipice, hitting 48-year-old High Point cyclist Sudie Jenkins Hatcher. Hatcher was riding with a group and was wearing a helmet, investigators say. The rock was three feet long and more than a foot wide and struck Hatcher fatally in the head. New River State Park officials do not believe the area poses further danger, and have allowed bikers, hikers and horseback riders to continue to use the accident scene. An investigation has been launched, but Virginia park officials do not anticipate closing the park anytime soon.

Foul play is not suspected.
