Democratic State Senator Kay Hagan announced her intentions to run against incumbent Republican Senator Elizabeth Dole today.

Hagan, a 5-term legislator and attorney from Greensboro, has been a co-chairwoman of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee since 2003.

Hagan’s competition for the Democratic nomination is Chapel Hill corporate financial adviser Jim Neal, who recently confirmed rumors that he is gay. State Representative Grier Martin of Raleigh is also considering a Democratic bid.

Dole took office when Republican Jesse Helms retired in 2002.
