Governor appeals for farmers PDF Print
Thursday, 25 October 2007 21:38

Governor Mike Easley made a personal appeal to Congress yesterday.

The two-term North Carolina governor testified before the House Agriculture Committee about the impact of this year’s drought on the state’s crops and livestock. Easley said homeowners and local governments have helped out by cutting their own water use, but farms are at the mercy of the weather. Congress is debating whether to set up permanent funding for agriculture disasters or keep the current loan system. According to Easley, loans aren’t much use if the farmers’ crops are dead and they can’t afford to repay the debt.
