The Watauga County Sheriff’s Office has also released a notice about a hoax involving sheriff’s departments and the Make A Wish Foundation. According to Sheriff’ Michael Cain of Yadkin County, after every election, a chain letter circulates to Sheriff’s offices attempting to get a new sheriff to send a business card to a boy the letter claims is a sick child named Chris Shepard. They say that Shepard’s wish is to obtain a business card from every Sheriff in the country. The targeted Sheriff is also told to mail twenty copies of the letter to other known Sheriffs. Sheriff Cain forwarded a warning to Watauga County’s Sheriff L.D. Hagaman, among others. Cain said that the Make a Wish Foundation has confirmed that the letter is a hoax. No word on how it got started, or what one would hope to achieve with such a hoax.
