Avery Animal Shelter Symptomatic of County Conflict PDF Print

A number of conflicts between seasonal and permanent residents in Avery includes the new Avery County Animal Shelter. After local shelter leadership managed to secure a tricky deal with the Avery County Commission at a commission meeting earlier this summer, a deed transfer secured a loan while awaiting other long-term funding. Then a number of issues surfaced that caused board chair Catherine Morton, then  Executive Director Laurie Vierheller to resign. Vierheller took the Executive Director position at the Watauga Humane Society since that time.  An event to thank the larger donors—excluding locals—was apparently the final issue that lead to a number of resignations of volunteers.
