The Watauga Commissioners formerly thanked the family of Deputy William Mast Jr. for his giving of his life in service to his county—commission chair Nathan Miller, “Whereas on the morning of July 26th, 2012, deputies from the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for assistance, resulting in Deputy William R. Mast Jr., giving the ultimate sacrifice for his community.” And further, “Now, therefore be it resolved that the Watauga County Board of Commissioners extend its deepest sympathies the family of William Ronald Mast Jr. for the loss of a beloved family member. And be it further resolved that the Board of Commissioners stands with the citizens of the Watauga County, the men and women of the Watauga Sheriff’s Office, and the members of the lawe enforcement community as they celebrate the life and mourn the loss of William Ronald Mast Jr., a devoted husband, dedicated public servant, and law enforcement hero.”
And the commissioners further thanked other law enforcement, other agencies, local groups—all who came together to help Watauga County in the tragedy. Commissioners voted to surplus and give to the Mast family Williams' service weapon and badge at the completion of the SBI investigation into the shooting that claimed his life last month.
