There’s been a change of plans regarding Deal Mill
Road Bridge in southern Caldwell County.
The bridge, that crosses Gunpowder
Creek, will be shut down. While NCDOT originally wanted to keep the existing
bridge open during most of the construction of a new bridge, officials have
determined it unsafe for traffic. The road will be closed, and the old bridge
will be removed before the new one is complete. The bridge shuts down Friday
and could remain closed for up to a year, depending on the time it takes to
construct the $1,8 million dollar bridge, to be located just upstream from the
previous bridge. In the meantime, residents of the Gunpowder Creek area will
have to use a detour.
