Aycock upsets Wilcox: Boone Election update PDF Print
Tuesday, 16 October 2007 10:26

The Boone Municipal Election canvassing held a few surprises today.

With the addition of 60 provisional ballots, Liz Aycock moved into third place in the Council race, replacing incumbent Dempsey Wilcox by four votes. Now Wilcox and fifth-place incumbent Bunk Spann have the option of requesting a revote. It’s an option sources say Wilcox is likely to take advantage of. The candidates have by 5 p.m. Thursday to decide.

Further controversy arose when local developer and Citizens for Change chair Jeff Templeton filed an election protest complaint. In his complaint, he alleged that results from the absentee ballots were posted before the polls closed, possibly altering the election’s outcome. He says the results were posted on local discussion site www.wataugawatch.net. Templeton alleges results were released by Board of Elections chair Stella Anderson, and calls for her dismissal. His complaint was rejected at the local level because as a resident of the extraterritorial jurisdiction, he was unable to vote.  The complaint will now be reviewed on a state level.
