Ashe investigators are now saying that the early Sunday morning fire that destroyed an Ashe church was arson, a fire set to cover a break-in and theft.   The North Beaver Baptist Church was totally destroyed in the blaze, discovered by a passing deputy. The deputy found the church, at the Boggs Road intersection with NC 163, with smoke pouring from the eaves at about 1 Sunday morning, according to church member Conard Mash. The discovery led to a call for a multi-agency response, the West Jefferson, Glendale Springs, Jefferson, and New River Volunteer Fire Departments battled the blaze, but by the time that effort got underway, the fire had broken through the roof and the building was beyond saving.  The Ashe Fire Marshal and SBI spent much of the morning poring over the fire scene, now determining that arson was the cause, and their investigation is still underway to find suspects.  Pastor Rick Miller said that the loss was about $175,000, and that rebuilding would certainly take a year, but that the church had been offered other meeting spaces.
