Avery 10-hour Power Outage Set for Saturday Night PDF Print

Might be a good day to buy a wind-up alarm clock—or maybe a generator.  And many will be late for church or their tee time Sunday morning. A large swath of Avery County customers of power provided by Mountain Electric from the TVA will be cut off for up to 10 hours this Saturday night, and that plan is causing all kinds of consternation.  Bars and restaurants are concerned that the outage comes in mid-summer, when their business is at its peak.  Others are concerned about safety with the High Country full of visitors, and others are saying that utilities have not properly notified the 15,000 customers to be effected by the outage, which will stretch through Banner Elk, Newland, Linville, Linville Falls, Crossnore, Altamont, Pineola and Jonas Ridge.  The reason for the outage is that the TVA is replacing equipment at the Cranberry substation, and the work—and the outage—is expected to last 8 to 10 hours, beginning at 11 Saturday night.
