The North Carolina State Fair is happening right now in Raleigh, and 84th District State Representative Phillip Frye gave us an update on how the defending national champions, Avery County’s own Mountain Laurel Smooth Dancers, are doing in this year’s state competition.
"It's been great. I sat through their 10:30
competition, and they did fantastically. It will make all of Avery
County proud, all of the families proud that they represented Avery
County so well," he said.
The dancers perform again this afternoon at 2:15, and several times throughout the week. Final results should be in next week, Frye said. The group that performed today is the Elementary/Middle School team. High school smooth dancers perform on Sunday, Frye said, and he expects Avery County to be well represented.
Last year, the Avery County Smooth Dancers not only took the state title, but the national title as well.
"The chances are really good this year. They did an excellent job," Frye said.
