Drug, Sex Offender Charged After Ashe Chase PDF Print

An Ashe County man, wanted for a number of charges—and for an earlier chase with law enforcement—was arrested after a second chase late last week near the NC 16-NC 88 intersection.  Not only is 56-year old Rex William Cummings of Fleetwood in trouble with the law, his brother’s truck, wrecked in the incident, may be seized. Cummings was charged Thursday afternoon by the Ashe County Sheriff's Office after the late morning chase, Cummings spotted driving the pickup, but again speeding away from lawmen.  ACSO Deputy Joe Francis executed what Sheriff James Williams called a ‘PIT maneuver,’ forcing and flipping the truck off the road and onto its top. Sheriff Williams said Cummings was wanted in Ashe and Alleghany Counties for conspiracy to traffic in cocaine, felony fleeing to elude arrest, failure to stop for blue light and siren, reckless driving to endanger, speeding, and as a sex offender, failing to report a change of address.  Williams said the vehicle Cummings was driving, which was said to belong to his brother, could also be seized under the “Run and You’re Done,” law which went into effect in December, 2011. The law allows the seizure of vehicles of those convicted of felony speeding to elude arrest.
