High Country counties bucked the state’s trend toward higher unemployment in figures for May released today. Ashe unemployment dropped .7 of a percent to 11.3%, while Avery’s dropped .4% to 11.4. Watauga’s drop was the smallest—but it’s unemployment the lowest
—down .1% to 8.2%. 76—just over three-quarters of the state’s counties—had increases in their jobless rate.
