The fire that damaged Phillip Road home at dawn today is being called suspicious, and is under investigation of the Avery County Sheriff’s Office and County Fire Marshal.  A passing motorist spotted smoke just before 7 this morning their neighbor’s Beech Creek area home, and arriving fire units found fire visible on their arrival.  Fall Creek, Beech Mountain and Banner Elk departments were called to the scene and knocked down the fire in short order, according to Fire Marshall David Charles Vance, who identified the owner as Tammy Bowman, but said she was away at the time of the 6:52am fire call. Vance said that a hall and a bedroom of the two-story home were damaged, but that firefighters managed a quick knockdown of the fire and the house is still structurally sound.  Vance said he could not comment on the nature of the fire, as it was still under investigation.
