Four year old Peyton Elizabeth Townsend was killed in a tragic accident on the grounds of Mount Paran Church on Wildcat Road Friday evening while attending Vacation Bible School.  The children were playing in the cemetery when a huge slab cross from a grave marker fell down on the child, witnesses putting the weight at between 500 and 1000 pounds.  Witnesses to the accident managed to free the child and start CPR while Deep Gap first Responders arrived, taking over treatment.  A landing zone was set up initially on US 421 near the Wilkes line until the severity of the child’s injuries forced the arriving chopper to make an approach very near the church.  While Peyton was being airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center, Watauga deputies escorted the family to the Tennessee Hospital, but the child was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Funeral service es for Peyton Elizabeth Townsend will be conducted Monday evening at 6 o’clock at the First Baptist Church in Blowing Rock, according to Austin and Barnes Funeral Home.  Officiating will be Rev. Rusty Guenther and Rev. Rhonda Gailes.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Lilly Grace Townsend Educational Fund, in care of State Employees Credit Union, 1470 Blowing Rock Road, Boone, NC 28607.  Graveside services and burial will be private.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6 o’clock until 8 o’clock at the First Baptist Church in Blowing Rock.  At other times friends may call at the residence of Wayne and Carol King, 207 Eastbrook Drive, Boone, NC.  Online condolences may be sent to the Townsend family at
