WCSO Captain Choice for New County Post PDF Print

It appears that Watauga County is ready to name Watauga Sheriff’s Office Captain Jeff Virginia to the new position over the consolidated 9-1-1 service for the county.  The first inkling of official action came last week in a county fire chief’s meeting in which Virginia was introduced as the choice by Watauga Commissioner Vince Gable. Gable, yesterday, said that he took Cpt. Virginia to the meeting but stated that it is still up to County Manager Deron Geouque to announce his final selection, and Geouque’s office last week said that he would be out of town until tomorrow.  Commissioners meet Tuesday for their first of June session. There appeared to be some angst on the part of the gathering of fire chiefs over the selection of someone from a law enforcement background rather than a fire background, and Gable indicated that was one reason for his attending the meeting last week, telling me yesterday that interests from fire, rescue, as well as law enforcement each wanted someone from their area to take the position, and questioning the choice was bound to happen. For the official word—stay tuned.
