Red Flag Fire Day Already Underway for Watauga Firefighters PDF Print

Boone, Blowing Rock, Stewart Simmons and the North Carolina Forest Service have spent the night on a fire in far southeast Watauga County inside the gates of Reynolds Blue Ridge where a wind-driven fire raced across a large area and deep into the gorge into the Sampson area.

The fire flared up late in the afternoon, but firefighters faced high winds driving the fire while they worked just to keep on their helmets as they worked the blaze.  More manpower is expected today as crews swap out, more state resources on the fire, but with the drier conditions and high winds, this and other fires could become real problems across the area.
