Last Wednesday, Boone Mayor Loretta Clawson presented two
proclamations regarding mental illness awareness to Steve Moeller.
on the Board of Directors for the local affiliate of the National Alliance on
Mental Illness (NAMI). Clawson declared the week of October 7-13 “Mental
Awareness Week” in the town of Boone. Additionally, Clawson declared Thursday,
October 11 as “Bipolar Disorder Awareness Day.” As part of the events scheduled
to promote mental health awareness, a depression screening clinic will be held
a week from Thursday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The screening is for adults only
and consists of a simple screening tool developed by the Harvard Department of
Psychiatry. A movie presentation on mental illness will round out the week on
the 12th at 7 p.m. at the Boone Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
October 7-13 is national Mental Illness Awareness
Week. The week was established in 1990 by Congress in recognition of NAMI’s
efforts to raise mental illness awareness. New River Behavioral Healthcare is a
cosponsor of the week.
