It’s a retreat that doesn’t go very far physically—the Boone Town Council ‘retreat’ today—but it covers plans for just about every town department.  The annual retreat is from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. today on familiar grounds—the Council Chambers on Blowing Rock Road. The retreat will feature reports from department heads on their needs for the coming fiscal year in preparation for their 2012-13 budgets. Some items to watch:  Consolidated dispatch with Watauga County offering to take over dispatch services, saving agencies in Watauga money.  Meanwhile, police need new dual band radios for the new VIPER communication system.  Boone Fire seeking a station 3 location and the funds to build it.
Public Utilities and Public Works are looking to a consolidation site for their operations, with Public Works reporting on the $25 million raw water intake from the New River and dealing with dramatic cost increases for materials they use. Street resurfacing needs will be included in the report.  Again, that meeting is 8:30 to 5 today.
