Officials hope a proposal to create a branch campus of the
UNC School of Medicine in Western North Carolina could bring more doctors and
jobs to the region.
A proposal has been submitted by Mission Health and
Hospitals, the Mountain Area Health Education Center and the Western North
Carolina Health Network.
A similar branch campus proposal has been submitted by
Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Due to increasing enrollment at Chapel
Hill, now may be the perfect time for expansion, officials say. Both proposals
are to go before the UNC Board of Governors and the General Assembly.
The Western North Carolina Campus could open by Sept.
2011 if approved.
