This week the state’s university system is considering
several sites for a new university- in Hickory.
Plans could include Appalachian
State University operating what would initially be a satellite campus. The
campus itself would be built over a 10-12 year period and serve more than
10,000 students. A university would not only be good for the local economy.
Experts say the facility would make education more accessible to the area. The
four-county Hickory Metro currently ranks 12th out of the state’s 14
metropolitan areas in the percentage of residents with a college degree,
according to the Western Piedmont Council of Governments.
