Elk Park Firefighters prep to go against Spruce Pine PDF Print
Sunday, 23 September 2007 22:29

img_1058_small.jpgAt last year’s firefighting competition, Elk Park Volunteer Fire Department placed second after Spruce Pine.

img_1060_small.jpgThis year, Elk Park’s making a comeback, assistant Chief Tim Winters says- but it’s not just about winning and losing.

It's incredibly fun, he says- and a great way for firefighters to make friends.

And it’s not all fun and games. The competitions mock real situations firefighters could face in a blaze. It’s valuable training.

The competition is Saturday in Spruce Pine- but Elk Park practiced all day yesterday. If you drove by Avery County High School after 3 p.m., you may have caught part of the act. Firefighters from Avery and Mitchell counties plan to participate in the competition.img_1061_small.jpg
