Several county fire and rescue workers turned out in reflective gear as a show of support for the new ordinance governing security access gates to communities that Watauga Commissioners approved during Tuesday’s meeting. No one came forward to speak during time set aside for a public hearing on the ordinance so Commission Chair, Nathan Miller, asked Commissioner Vince Gable to lead the discussion for the proposal, “We have approximately 50 or 60 gated communities and its growing all the time and there is issues with access to first responders, law enforcement, fire, in these communities.” Boone Fire Marshal, Ronnie Marsh, was present to answer questions and explain technical aspects of the proposed ordinance. Mr. Marsh explained that the new ordinance will not affect existing gates unless at some point they are upgraded at which time they will come under the new ordinance requirements. The requirements call for the widths of entryways to be large enough to allow passage of the newer fire trucks and be located so these trucks can easily make the turn from the roadway through the gates. Additionally the ordinance requires the gates to have electrical devices that will hold them open during power failures. Chief Marsh explained this, saying “If your subdivision has a gated community and we have a power failure that lasts for three or four hours and we have an alarm there, it has to either hold open or have to have a secondary power source.” The motion to approve the new ordinance passed unanimously.
