Banner Elk Elementary Access Still an Issue PDF Print

Great new school—difficult access.  That’s the dilemma for the new Banner Elk Elementary, with Avery County Manager Robert Wiseman discussing options at yesterday’s commission meeting in Newland. Option 1 would be a right turn lane, an idea the NC DOT would fund – but the County would have to fund the acquisition of 8 pieces of private property that would be needed for right of way, Cost: $250,000 plus. Option 2 would be a mini traffic circle—a  Round About which could create a new set of problems for busses and food trucks going over the median at Best Western.

Option 3—do nothing, as Principal Debra Wilcox spoke and assured the Board and the Commissioners that everything is currently running smoothly as it is. She said that unless there is major growth in Banner Elk in the near future, “we truly don't need to do anything.”  She suggested another year—one with a more realistic winter, might necessitate another look down the road. Discussion lead to the solution of a police officer on site 45 minutes twice a day being more cost effective that other current options. Next step comes from the Banner Elk town Council, with Commissioner Scott Heath to speak on the situation.
