An Avery County Deputy was involved in a traffic accident late yesterday afternoon on Elk Park Highway, a collision first reported as an injury accident, but one that no one was transported from.  Deputy Tim Clawson was traveling toward Elk Park and did not stop in time to avoid rear ending a vehicle stopped because of a vehicle turning into the dumpster area, according to Sheriff Kevin Frye.  The sheriff said that any disciplinary action against the deputy could not be released as it is a personnel matter. He said,  “Statistically we still average much fewer accidents than an average driver, and drastically fewer than other law enforcement agencies.  In 2009 for example the NCSHP averaged one accident per day, the Avery County Sheriff’s Office has had only three major property damage accidents in the past five years.  It was the second accident involving a patrol car in three months.
