N.C. Bill of Rights on Display: One week only PDF Print
Monday, 17 September 2007 20:30
North Carolina’s original copy of the Bill of Rights is on display this week at the N.C. Museum of History.
The piece of parchment was taken from the Capitol Building at the end of the Civil War 142 years ago, possibly as contraband by a Union soldier. An FBI agent posing as a museum buyer seized the document in 2000, and it was returned to North Carolina in August of 2005. The document lists 12 proposed amendments to the U.S. constitution presented to the states in 1789. The amendments were ultimately reduced to 10. The display is presented in honor of Constitution Week.
