NC House Speaker Thom Tillis brought his Town Meeting series to Boone late yesterday afternoon, taking all questions from a full meeting room at the Broyhill Inn.  With a room filled with educators and students, there were a lot of questions about budget and program cuts, but he said that he hears a lot from ASU Chancellor Ken Peacock, “Your Chancellor does a great job of reminding me that we never give them enough money.  And to be honest with you, he’s right. We have a $20 billion budget.  More than half of it—about 55%--goes to education. So when you have a down-turn like we have and a $3 billion deficit, we have to figure out how to balance that budget. So the trade-off we make is how much more can we impose tax increases on individuals to offset the deficit and how much do we just live within our means.  Those are the tough decisions we went through.”
