Boone Closing in on Noise Ordinance PDF Print
Written by Gary Childers

Boone Town Council moved one step closer to completing the revised noise ordinance for the Town of Boone during a special called meeting last night. The focus on the noise ordinance shifted to how it could be enforced by Boone officers, Police Chief, Dana Crawford, sharing his ideas on revisions he would like to see, including a return to metering

and the elimination of each venue having its own ‘plan.’
The chief based a number of his recommendations on Greenville North Carolina’s ordinance due to its similarity to Boone as a college town. On the other side of the issue, the owner of Boone Saloon, Skip Sinanian, who has been in the forefront of the issue for music venues, said the moves were in the “right direction.”
The Council determined that more study to determine appropriate decibel levels needed to be done, the distance from an establishment at which the decibel level would be measured needed to be decided, a limit to the number of violations allowed before revoking a business’s noise permit needed to be established, and the cost of permits needed reviewing. In an effort to determine acceptable decibel levels for the new ordinance the next Council meeting will contain an interesting twist. The police department will set up a demonstration during the break of their next meeting simulating loud music at various decibel levels.
