An ASU student was killed, 9 other ASU students were injured in an early Sunday morning crash on US 321 that involved a car loaded with 8 passengers and the designated driver.  Trooper Alexander reported that the student killed was 25-year old Paul Ernest Wuerzner of 645 Huckleberry Trail, in Boone—the driver of a Chevy Cobalt . Alexander said that Wuerzner’s car ran off the road to the right south-bound on 321, and pulling the car back on the road, he crossing the center line, slamming head-on into the 2009 Subaru Daniel Joseph Szymczyk was driving toward Boone.  With a total of nine in the car, there weren’t enough seatbelts for everyone, and 19-year old Ashley Hlinak of Mooresville was the most seriously injured—apparently not buckled in the Subaru.  She was rushed to Watauga Medical Center and airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center by WINGS Air Rescue for treatment of face and leg injuries. Watauga Medics, Blowing Rock Fire/Rescue, and Watauga Rescue supplied ambulances to transport the 9 to Watauga Medical Center, along with crash trucks and other emergency equipment.  Watauga Medics rushed Paul Wuerzner to Watauga Memorial doing CPR en route, but trooper Alexander said he was apparently dead on the scene.  No charges will be filed, according to Alexander.
