Officials have yet to pinpoint a cause of a Saturday
blaze at the Foothills Bio-Energies plant on Virginia Street.
Two tanks of
soybean oil and animal fat used for making fuel burned in a storage area.
Officials within the plant say the fats were not flammable- and are curious to
know what started the fire. Finding the cause is particularly important,
officials say, to make sure the incident never happens again. While there was
some grease runoff into a nearby stream, the local water supply should be safe,
officials say. S.T.A.T. Inc., Caldwell County Emergency Services and the North
Carolina Department of Environmental and Natural Resources, as well as
Foothills Bio-Energies, have been investigating the area- making sure there are
no environmental dangers from the incident.
