In a surprise action the Ashe County Board of Commissioners accepted county manager, Daniel McMillan’s, letter of resignation following a closed executive session at the conclusion of Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting. In follow-up action they appointed Dr. Patricia Miller,

current director of Economic Development, as interim County Manager. No further comments were made by the commissioners following these actions.
Mr. McMillan was not in attendance however in his letter of resignation he referred to his awareness that “there are differences in the feelings of the direction that Ashe County should take in future endeavors and planning”. He went on to write, “there are too many good things that have been accomplished for the citizens of Ashe County to allow any disparity between me as County Manager and the Commissioners that could create future tensions”.
His resignation was effective July 29th a 4:00pm with the agreement of a severance package through December 31st. Board of Commissioners chair, Judy Poe, stated the severance package was payment of his salary through December at which time Mr. McMillan will be eligible for the county’s retirement benefit package.
