On July 15th, 2011, two individuals were sentenced by a federal court for their participation in a federal prescription conspiracy that culminated in the arrest of fourteen suspects in March 2010. The Watauga County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Unit, in conjunction with the United States Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration,

with the assistance of Boone PD and Avery County Sheriff’s Office, initiated an investigation of a drug trafficking organization (DTO) that was receiving prescription narcotics by presenting pharmacies in both North Carolina and Tennessee with fraudulent prescriptions. It is estimated the DTO acquired 130,000 pills over several years time with an estimated street value of $4,000,000.00 dollars.
Dawn Cook, 40, of Newland NC received a sentence of 110 months confinement to a federal facility to be followed by 6 years on supervised release. Jordan Hughes, 24, of Roan Mtn, TN received a sentence of 72 months confinement to a federal facility to be followed by 3 years on supervised release.
