2nd Grand Opening for local winery tonight PDF Print
Thursday, 23 August 2007 20:00

It’s the second grand opening for New River Winery owner Haskell McGuire.

The wine was so popular that the original location in downtown West Jefferson just wasn’t big enough. The new location is in the old Lansing School.

McGuire got into the wine business after he retired. He got together with other local winemakers and employed the help of Dr. Dan Strickland.

What started as a hobby became a successful business.

According to McGuire, New River offers something special- and that's wines that use locally grown produce.

“Back porch blueberry” is an excellent choice- made from Ashe County blueberries. 11 wines are distributed by New River. Three of which come from Ashe County grown ingredients.

McGuire hopes more wineries will follow suit and take shop in the High Country.

The more wineries in an area- the more likely wine enthusiasts will choose it as a vacation destination.

The Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting is at 5 this evening.
